Glee Wants Bruce Springsteen
If you’ve read the Glee cover story in the latest issue of EW, you know there’s one artist above all whose music the Fox series’ brain trust is aching to take on: Bruce Springsteen. “I think Bruce is our next holy grail,” Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy told EW. “My musical tastes begin and end with him basically,” added co-creator Brad Falchuk.
This is all strictly hypothetical for now. Springsteen’s camp had no comment when asked if he’d be interested in licensing his music to Glee. But hey, that’s no reason not to get some early speculation going — because this is an awesome idea.
Okay, sure, so Springsteen doesn’t make quite the same kind of campy pop-rock showstoppers as previous Glee inspirations like Journey or Queen. So what? Anyone who’s seen Springsteen in concert knows how great his tunes sound when they’re being belted out to the farthest row. Just imagine the Glee kids going to town on “Born to Run” or “Rosalita” or (wild-card choice here) “Murder Incorporated.” I could even see a slower number like “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” or “I’m on Fire” getting the Glee treatment. And that’s not even counting Springsteen’s actual singalong-ready pop hits like “Dancing in the Dark” and “Hungry Heart.”
What do you say? How cool would it be to see the Glee cast cover Springsteen? Which of his songs would you like them to tackle? Make your suggestions below — who knows, Fox and/or the Boss himself might be reading…

Don't Stop Believin' Goes Gold, Music Passes 2 Million Mark
In yet another sign that Glee has gone from smash comedy hit to cultural phenomenon, the cast's rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" has just been certified Gold for digital sales in excess of 500,000 downloads, and to date, over two million Glee songs have been purchased online. Seven songs from Glee now occupy spots in the top 200 of iTunes' Top Songs chart and Newsweek recently observed that the FOX series' "rabid online fanbase has given the show's music a life of its own." It's this fervor for the music that prompted the New York Times to say "from Cabaret' to Kanye, Songs of Glee' are a hit" and the Los Angeles Times to add "this comedy has become music to our ears."
On Tuesday, November 3, Glee: The Music, Volume 1 hits stores. This highly anticipated debut soundtrack will feature 17 songs heard in Glee's first season (see below for full track listing). Glee has set itself apart as one of the few scripted television shows to feature music so prominently and successfully. Entertainment Weekly recently stated that Glee was able to accomplish this "by making music so catchy and addictive, it's taken on a life and revenue stream of its own." They also went on to proclaim "the snarky, theatrical series is a cult phenomenon on its way to becoming a national obsession."

Upcoming Song Spoilers
While we won't be seeing a new Glee episode until Nov. 11 due to Fox's coverage of the World Series, we have a peek at some of the cover tunes you'll be hearing in upcoming episodes. The Nov.. 11 episode "Wheels" features a soaring "diva-off" between Rachel (Lea Michele) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) over Wicked's "Defying Gravity"—be prepared to get misty. Also, Artie (Kevin McHale) and the club do a wheelchair number set to Tina Turner's "Proud Mary." In the coming weeks, look for group versions of Van Halen's "Jump" and John Lennon's "Imagine," which the glee club performs with a rival deaf choir. Says co-creator Ryan Murphy, "Everyone who sees it sheds a tear." Also, Finn (Cory Monteith) does Paul Anka's "You're Having My Baby" and Rachel will tackle the Barbara Streisand/Funny Girl classic "Don't Rain on My Parade". "It was my dream and I could not believe that I got to do that song," says Michele.

Matthew Morrison Reveals Plans For Solo Album
Matthew Morrison is keeping busy helping the kids of “Glee” hit a high note on the small screen. But off-screen, the Broadway-turned-primetime star will soon be busy making beautiful music all his own.
Matthew, who plays “Glee” club mentor Will Schuester on the hit FOX show, revealed to Access Hollywood he will soon be working on his own album.
“Right now, I’ve almost finalized a record deal and am going to be working on an album,” he told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush.
And what sort of sound does America’s favorite teacher envision for his debut release?
“It’s going to be different. I would consider it a classier Justin Timberlake album,” he revealed. “It’s going to be me and a big orchestra, but also with beats.”
“Kind of like Timberlake meets [Michael] Buble?” Billy asked.
“Exactly,” Matthew said.
Of course, music is nothing new to the 30-year-old star. A veteran of Broadway, Matthew’s stage credits include “Footloose,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” “Hairspray,” “South Pacific” and “The Light in the Piazza,” which earned the actor a Tony nomination in 2005 for his role as Fabrizio Nacarelli.
But conquering different mediums is all part of the master plan, the thesp revealed.
“I want to be like the next Gene Kelly. I want to kind of do it all,” he noted. “I want to have a career in movies, television, music and Broadway – but have them all be separate, their own entities.”
And while Matthew isn’t the only “Glee” star planning their own solo album — show creator Ryan Murphy told Billboard that Lea Michele (another former Broadway star-turned-“Glee” club member) is also considering a solo project — one endeavor Matthew won’t be sharing with his cast mates is the reported show tour set for summer 2010.
“You probably know as much as I do about it. I just read about it online,” Matthew joked with Billy. “I don’t think I’m going to be involved in that. Mr. Schuester likes to take his summer break.”
'Macy's... Parade' Rejection Being Worked Into An Episode
And finally, Murphy also says that he’s planning on using the whole NBC/Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade snafu into an upcoming episode. Look for the glee club to get denied from having a float in the spring festival parade thanks to the villainous Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), standing in for NBC.

Glee's Holiday Cheer, and Future Cast Solo Projects
Now that the show's download surges have established a weekly rhythm, Stringer and Bywater can focus their attention on the release of "Glee: The Music Volume 1," the first in a series of soundtracks featuring music from the show. The 17-song set will feature some of the most popular numbers from the season's first half. Columbia and Fox hope to attract casual buyers as well as the show's rabid fans.
"We think there will be a huge population of passive buyers walking through stores during the holidays and saying, 'Oh, I've seen "Glee," ' and picking up the record," Bywater says. "I think we'll see considerable sales in the Wal-Marts, Targets and Best Buys of the world."
In addition to the soundtracks, a cover of Wham's "Last Christmas" will be recorded by the cast, and although it won't air on the show, the song will be released as a single by mid-November.
As for long-term plans, a much-rumored cast tour is now in the initial stages of planning. It will likely occur in summer 2010, and Murphy will direct the show. A deal with a concert promoter is pending, he says, noting, "We're going to sit with them all in a couple of weeks and feel out the best vibe."
Another less-talked-about component of Columbia's deal with Fox is that the label has the option to sign members of the "Glee" cast to solo deals. But Stringer says the label isn't rushing to do this anytime soon, as it's committed to the show for more than one season.
" 'Glee' isn't even anywhere near where it will be in a month or year's time," he says. "The show will be five times bigger than it is now, just from word-of-mouth, so we're not in any panic or rush to overplay things, because there's plenty of time."
That said, it appears that one of the show's brightest stars has at least been sitting with label executives to discuss what her own material might sound like. "Lea has tried different songs and already thought, 'Maybe I like doing rock,' " Murphy says. "Her album is not going to be Broadway stuff. She'll sit with producers and come up with her own concept."
As for whether any other cast members have had talks with Columbia, Michele will only say, "I have no idea, but all I know is that as soon as Amber Riley [who plays Mercedes] makes her album, I'm going to be the first one buying it."
However popular "Glee" becomes in the near year, or two, or three-that's as many as Murphy has mapped out so far-it's clear the show has legs in more than one sector of the entertainment business. And through its partnership with Fox, Columbia knows that it's landed on a winning formula.
"I'd like to have 10 'Glees'-my life would be a lot easier," Stringer says. "So, do I want to continue to be in this business? Absolutely."
